This Month's Focus: The Three Mindsets in Leadership

Someone once told me that every audience, whether in a presentation, speech or a team setting, falls into three categories.

  1. The Engaged – They are eager to learn, absorb your message, and apply it. They are aligned with the vision and driven to contribute.
  2. The Skeptical – They listen, analyze, and process but remain unconvinced. While they respect you and your perspective, they require continuous reassurance.
  3. The Disengaged – They are uninterested, disengaged, and, in some cases, actively resistant. Some even see your failure as an opportunity for their advancement.

What Does This Mean for Leaders?

Leadership is no different. Not everyone on your team will fully align with your values or vision.

  • The first group is an asset—motivated, ethical, and committed. Your role is to keep them inspired.
  • The second group requires effort. They may be high performers, but they demand ongoing validation. If both the leader and the employee share a growth mindset, this investment can be worthwhile.
  • The third group resists teamwork, thrives on conflict, and does not contribute positively.

The Leadership Approach

The solution is clear but not always easy: listen, acknowledge differences, and foster transparent communication. Without addressing misalignment, achieving collective success becomes nearly impossible. If someone refuses to be a supportive teammate, it may be time for them to move on.

Your priority as a leader? Keep the first two groups engaged and aligned; don’t waste excessive energy on the third. Focus on those willing to move forward with you, and together, you’ll build a culture of collaboration, growth, and success.

Leadership Observation

Our latest Keep the Line Moving podcast episode features Professor and Author Stephan Meier, who shares insights on treating employees like customers. We survey customers regularly, yet rarely do the same for employees.

A Key Question: Why don’t organizations survey employees more often?

Answer: Because they might not like the feedback, and making necessary changes is difficult.

Take the annual NFLPA Annual Player Report Card as an example. Teams receiving low grades now face a choice: adapt based on feedback or maintain the status quo and hope for the best.

We discussed this on this KTLM Extras podcast, concluding that leaders in regular contact with employees shouldn’t need a report card (or survey) to understand the workplace climate. Frequent check-ins build trust, identify issues early, and reinforce a positive culture.

What We’re Working On

Leading with Intention: Developing First-Time Leaders

Leadership isn’t accidental. It requires preparation, self-awareness, and a commitment to growth. Our workshops and our new Lunch and Learn series (announcement coming) equip first-time leaders with the skills to navigate transitions, performance reviews, and workplace challenges.

The Power of Preparation: Active Listening and Asking the Right Questions

Great leadership starts with awareness of oneself, others, and the bigger picture. Active listening and thoughtful questioning build trust, alignment, and stronger professional relationships.

Self-Awareness: The Cornerstone of Leadership

How you present yourself, through tone, body language, and word choice, shapes how others perceive and respond to you. Leaders who recognize the power of self-awareness lead with authenticity and confidence.

Intentional Leadership: Taking Control of Your Growth

Leadership isn’t just a title, it’s a mindset. Advocating for yourself, aligning with your organization’s vision, and maintaining a growth-oriented approach are critical for long-term success.

Our Lunch and Learn series delivers practical, thought-provoking insights to strengthen leadership skills. Interested? Let us know—you have to eat anyway!
